Books

I wrote my first photography book in 2009, although I’d been writing ‘how to’ magazine articles on photography and Photoshop (and reviewing photo gear) for almost a decade before that. I now have more than a dozen books with my name on them, most of which have been translated into multiple languages that I can’t read...

I don’t know which of the following books are still in print, but if there’s a specific title (or language) you’re after and you’re struggling to find a copy, send me a message — who knows, I may well have a signed copy of that ‘elusive masterpiece’ on my bookshelf.

Thinking of writing a book of your own? Why not check out my editorial services and see how I can help!

  • “How Do I Photograph A Sunset?”

    Ilex (2021)

For me, one of the best ways of learning about anything is to ask questions.

“How Do I Photograph A Sunset?” draws on my years of experience manning the Q&A pages in Amateur Photographer magazine to deliver the answers to the questions that novice photographers ask most; from choosing the right camera kit to getting the best from it, and, of course, how to nail that perfect sunset!

  • #Photo52

    Ilex (2021)

Publishers love the number 52 for project-themed books because it gives you that ‘one a week’ vibe. This is the fourth book that’s been published with my name and the number 52 on the cover!

#Photo52 sees 52 projects cherry picked from my earlier ‘weekend projects’ titles (Creative Digital Photography and Creative Photography), and re-presented in a new-look book. If you have both of those earlier titles then, honestly, save your money — there’s nothing new to see here. If not, there’s a whole year’s worth of inspiration waiting inside!

  • Complete Photography (Updated edition)

    Ilex (2021)

Essentially the same book as 2017’s Complete Photography, but as the yellow roundel on the cover says, it’s been ‘revised and updated’ to bring it up to date.

  • Birds of Instagram

    Unipress Books (2021)

With locations ranging from the Antarctic to the Amazon, this book showcases some of the most incredible bird photographs — and photographers — to be found on Instagram.

Co-authored with the renowned ornithologist, David Allen Sibley (of The Sibley Guide To Birds fame), this book makes a great gift for birders and photographers who want to appreciate the feathered subjects beyond the confines of a digital screen.

  • Mastering Film Photography

    Ammonite Press (2019)

Not only does film have a distinct look that digital images can struggle to emulate, but it also encourages a more considered and thoughtful approach. Without instant feedback, and with a financial cost for every frame, you have to work harder and think more about what you’re doing, and I believe that can — and will — help make you a better photographer.

Whether you’re picking up a film camera for the first time, returning to emulsion after a break, or simply want to brush up on your film-based photography skills, this book — my ‘love letter’ to emulsion — is the one for you.

  • 52 Assignments: Experimental Photography

    Ammonite Press (2019)

A collection of 52 hugely experimental photography projects to get you thinking outside the box!

Putting this book together was a whole lot of fun; I got to burn prints, drown them, make some crazy contraptions for my cameras and generally do a bunch of things that ‘serious’ photographers avoid. I hope you have as much fun with it too!

  • Brilliant Brick Builds: Amazing Creations In Lego®

    Quintet Publishing (2017)

As well as photography books, I’ve worked ‘behind the scenes’ on hundreds of other titles across a wide range of subjects — including writing this Lego-themed title.

Brilliant Brick Builds showcases some absolutely phenomenal builds from the world of Lego MOC (‘My Own Creation’), ranging from scale replicas of famous real-world ships to jaw-dropping fantasy worlds; there’s even a life-size replica Batmobile from Lego master builder, Nathan Sawaya.

  • Complete Photography

    Ilex (2017)

This is the biggest and most comprehensive book I’ve written to date, weighing in at 400 pages!

Although aimed primarily at novice photographers, Complete Photography also covers more advanced techniques, so will not only get you started with your camera, but help you take your burgeoning skills to the next level. A great gift for any aspiring photographer — even if I do say so myself!

  • Handmade Lampshades

    GMC Publications (2015)

This crafty title is essential reading if you want to learn how to make stunning lampshades for your home. Written by my long-standing (long-suffering?) partner, Natalia Price-Cabrera, I picked up my camera and took hundreds of step-by-step photos showing the processes involved in creating some truly gorgeous shades.

If making your own isn’t your thing, head over to Mols&TatiLois where you can buy one of Natalia’s readymade creations or commission your own bespoke vision.

  • Photography Beyond Auto

    Ilex (2015)

A no-nonsense beginner’s guide to moving beyond the Auto setting on your camera.

Unlike a lot of photography books, you won’t find pages filled with impenetrable jargon or unnecessary technicalities in this book, just straight-to-the-point text that will take your photography to the next level!

  • Landscape Photography: The Four Seasons

    Ilex (2013)

A ‘remastered’ version of the four small-scale, season-based books released in 2011. It’s the exact same words and pictures, repackaged into a more traditional book format.

If you got the first book, there’s really no need to get this as well; if not, the landscape photos benefit from the slightly larger page size of this edition.

  • The Beginner’s Digital Photography Guide

    Dorling Kindersley (2013)

This is a book that I can genuinely call a ‘best seller’, although I suspect that has more to do with it coming from one of the world’s largest publishers than it bearing my name on the cover…

If you’re just starting your photographic journey this book is packed with step-by-step walkthroughs that will help you find your photographic feet; from inserting a memory card to navigating the buttons, dials and menus on your digital camera.

  • Creative Photography: 52 More Weekend Projects

    Ilex (2012)

The sequel to the 2009 ‘blockbuster’ Creative Digital Photography. Like its predecessor, a fantastic team of contributors (plus myself!) deliver 52 projects that cover everything from shooting to processing, with plenty of DIY makes in between.

This time round the word ‘digital’ was dropped from the title to allow some analogue fun to sit alongside the digital delights!

  • Plastic Cameras: Lo-Fi Photography In The Digital Age

    Ammonite Press (2012)

I love the lo-fi aesthetic! For me, blur, grain, vignetting and all those other things that some people call ‘defects’ can really contribute to making a photograph look... well, photographic

Combining practical shooting techniques with DIY camera hacks and inspirational images, Plastic Cameras: Lo-Fi Photography In The Digital Age is a celebration of the cameras (and photographers) that eschew the pixel-perfect digital world in favour of ‘honest’ photographs that revel in their often unique imperfections.

  • Landscape Photography: The Four Seasons

    Ilex (2011)

From dealing with the high contrast lighting of summer, to the challenges of shooting winter snow, Landscape Photography: The Four Seasons looks at how the seasons impact the landscape, and how we need to adapt our photography accordingly.

The original ‘package’ consists of four individual, small-format hardback books (one for each season) presented in a hard-cover case; a more traditional softback version was issued in 2013.

  • Light & Shoot: 50 Fashion Photos

    Ilex (2011)

Fashion photography is a fantastically broad genre, as this book demonstrates. In Light & Shoot: 50 Fashion Photos, a global line-up of exceptional talent — including ‘big hitters’ such as Miles Aldridge, Raul Higuerra, Perou and Rankin — takes us behind the scenes to show us how their shots were created.

Descriptions from the photographers and detailed lighting diagrams provide an incredible insight into how 50 stunning images were created, allowing you to follow in their footsteps.

  • Creative Digital Photography: 52 Weekend Projects

    Ilex (2009)

This was a truly collaborative effort that saw a great team of contributors (myself included) conjure up 52 fun projects that encompass shooting skills, lenses, lighting and processing.

Creative Digital Photography was published in the US by Amphoto Books as Camera Creative and translated into at least nine different languages, none of which I can read…
